Jan.15

This weekend two of the Casuals' junior teams competed in Indoor Tournaments.

In their semi-final against Futebol Benfica B on Saturday, the U-12s were 1-0 up at the interval, but then scored 3 more goals to win the game 4-0. In the Final against Futebol Benfica A, they were soon 0-1 down. After equalising, they then squandered several chances (including a Penalty stroke), but eventually overrran their opponents 6-1.

This morning the U-18s were 2-0 up against Sport Club by the break. But, instead of building on this base, some sloppy defending allowed their opponents to pull back to 2-2 . However, the Casuals then pulled away to win the game 5-2.

Their second game against Lousada was a fast-paced encounter: the Casuals did well to keep out their adversary for most of the game, but in a two minute period in the second half, Lousada managed to score 3 times, and the Casuals went down 0-3.

Jan.8, 2012

After the Men's defeats to Futebol Benfica and Carris in yesterday's Tournament with the visiting Dubai Falcons, the Casuals did better in today's three events.

The U-14s began their indoor tournament with a 3-2 win against Futebol Benfica: after going 0-2 down, they fought back with 3 well taken goals. In the final they went 1-0 up against Carris. Although their opponents scored 3 goals, the Casuals pulled back a goal but could not avoid a 2-3 defeat.

The Veterans drew 3-3 against Belenenses and then beat the Dubai Falcons 2-1.

Meanwhile the U-18s travelled to Porto to play in the Viso Tournament. In their first indoor game of the season against CAMIR, their lack of experience left them trailing 1-6 at the interval. But in the second half they got a better grip on their tactics and pulled back 2 goals: only a penalty corner conversion in the last seconds sealed CAMIR's 7-3 win. In their second game against Viso, the Casuals continued their improvement to notch up a 6-0 win.

Dec.4

The U-18s yesterday played two indoor games against a young team from the Escola Luis Freitas Branco. In the first game, the Casuals B team lost 1-2, but the A team were too strong for the school and ran out 5-1 winners.

This morning the Men played their first indoor league match against Futebol Benfica. Despite the Casuals going 0-1 down early on, both teams scored at regular intervals and the scores stayed even for much of the game. But a couple of defensive slips allowed F.Benfica to pull ahead, eventually notching up a 9-5 win.

Nov.20

Yesterday's hockey was played on the Casa Pia pitch at Belêm. After going 2-0 up in their opening semi-final against Carris, the U-14s eventually battled out a 4-4 draw: in the ensuing penalty shoot-out, they scored twice to take them through to the final. However, despite battling valiantly in their second game, they were overrun 0-12 by a very strong Lousada team.

Meanwhile the Veterans, aided by the late inclusion of ex GB international and Olympic coach Norman Hughes, played four matches in their 7-a-side Tournament. After drawing their opening game 2-2 with Viso, they were a little unlucky to lose three very close games, always by just one goal.

At the Federation's annual 'Gala do Hóquei' later in the afternoon, two of the Casuals' Ladies team were honoured: Claudia Fidalgo was named "Player of the Year" and Angela Lima received the "Judge of the Year" award. Stephen Fernandes and Marcos Ferreira also received Awards for Dedication to Hockey.

This morning the Ladies played in their first Indoor Tournament: from going 0-3 down in the first 10 minutes against Belenenses, they settled down and improved their positioning to stop their hosts scoring again, but nor were they able to find the net themselves. In their second game Lousada took a 1-0 lead, but the Casuals continued their improvement and equalised 1-1 in the last minute.

Nov.13

The Veterans were in Porto this weekend for their annual trophy matches against the Oporto British Club. On Saturday at the Parque de Cidade they had most of the possession and went in at half time 3-0 in the lead, aided by two penalty corner conversions. Oporto came back in the second half with 2 goals from counter attacks, but Casuals maintained their composure and their hold on the Dawson Plate to run out comfortable 5-2 winners.

Today, on a soggy grass pitch, the Casuals Mixed team fell 0-3 behind in the first half of the Seadon Cup: whilst dominating possession in the second half, Casuals just could not break through Oporto's packed defence and, despite clawing back one goal and missing a penalty stroke, could not reduce the final 1-3 deficit.

The Men's team also travelled to Espinho today to play their last league match before the Indoor break. On a rain-soaked pitch, the hosts were soon 2 goals up and, despite the Casuals pulling back a goal from a penalty stroke, Espinho scored a third before half time. The Casuals clearly had the better of the second half, but just could not find the net, despite forcing a string of penalty corners. To add insult to injury, Espinho scored a fourth goal from their own penalty corner in the last minute.

Nov.6

In the first of their weekend's two league fixtures, the Men had little trouble beating Juventude 11-1 yesterday. The Ladies also picked up another league win when they beat their Juventude counterparts 3-0.

In this morning's second Men's match, the Casuals faced Carris: the local derby did not start well for them, when their opponents broke on a counter attack to take the lead after five minutes. However, the Casuals soon found an equaliser and they then converted a penalty to lead 2-1 at the break. They fought hard to increase their lead in the second half but, despite going close several times, there was no further score and the Casuals sealed their second win of the weekend to jump several places in the league table.

The Veterans also played two matches this weekend against a visiting ASV München team, losing one and winning the other.

Oct.29

The Veterans played Belenenses this afternoon and were soon 2-0 up, only to concede a goal from the last move of the first half. Both teams played constructive hockey in the second half and Belenenses managed to equalise at 2-2; but the Casuals scored twice more and, despite another Belenenses goal, ran out 4-3 winners.

Oct.23

In this morning's league match against Lamas, the Men started with some good hockey and they took a 1-0 lead into the break. Unfortunately the Casuals lost another midfield player with a broken finger, and their second half performance dropped enough to allow Lamas back into the game with two well-taken goals that sealed a 1-2 defeat.

However in the afternoon the Ladies took on local rivals Belenenses in torrential rain and continued their good form with a 3-0 win, but the scoreline does not reflect the closenes of the game.

Oct.16

It was a highly successful weekend for both senior Casuals teams. The Ladies travelled to Lousada to play the two local teams. Yesterday they scored early in their match against Lousada and then put up a great defensive performance to hold off last season's Champions and win by the only goal of the game. This afternoon they played their second match against Juventude and had little trouble, notching up a 10-0 win.

Meanwile the Men travelled to Porto this morning to play Viso. They led 1-0 at the interval, when an excellent cross from the left was sent into the roof of the net at the far post. Although the second half started very evenly, the Casuals attack was able to score 2 more goals from open play, before Viso were awarded a penalty for an illegal stop on the line: even this chance was well saved, for the Casuals to run out 3-0 winners.

Oct.12

It has been a busy start to the season, with visits by three touring teams. In September the Ladies won two close matches against Woldingham School U-18s from the UK 1-0. They then faced a stern test against Club an der Alster Ladies from Hamburg, going down 1-6; in their second game, the Hamburg Ladies were beaten 4-3 by our U-18s with some reinforcements from the Veterans.

Last week the U-18s lost an exciting game against World Sport Barbarians U-19s: after going 0-2 down, the Casuals played some ferocious hockey to take a 4-2 lead, but allowed the South Africans to snatch a 5-4 win in the final minutes. Our Ladies made up for this with a 4-1 win against the Barbarians' U-19 Girls.

Meanwhile both the Casuals senior teams started their league season with defeats. The Men lost both their first two matches against Futebol Benfica and Lousada 1-3, with all 6 goals conceded from penalties and penalty corners. The Ladies lost their opening fixture against Sport Club 1-4.

The Men were encouraged tonight by a 2-0 win in a friendly match against Carris, but both Casuals teams travel north for difficult fixtures at the weekend.

June 19

The U-18s today came 2nd at the National Finals at the Estádio Nacional. In their semi-final in the morning they beat Lousada 3-0, but the scoreline does not reflect the balance of the game. Although the Casuals were 2-0 up at the interval, Lousada had much of the play and created several good chances. They increased the pressure in the final 20 minutes and only an outstanding display by the Casuals keeper kept the ball out. A third goal from a counter attack 4 minutes from the end sealed the Casuals' win.

In the Final in the afternoon, their opponents, Sport Club, showed their intent by opening the scoring from a penalty corner after only 2 minutes, but the Casuals equalised (also from a penalty corner) after quarter of an hour. By half tme Sport had opened up a 2-goal lead but, 10 minutes into the second half, the Casuals gave their supporters hope of a comeback with a well-worked field goal which reduced the arrears to 2-3. However, with the Casuals' boys tiring, Sport scored twice in the last 8 minutes to run out worthy Champions with a 5-2 win.

June 5

The U-18s played Sport Club this afternoon in this season's final league match. Although the visitors scored first, the Casuals scored two goals from open play to take a 2-1 lead before Sport found an equaliser to end the game 2.2.

The Casuals finish the league in 2nd place and now prepare for the National Finals on June 19th, where they will play Lousada in the first semi-final.

May 29

Four teams competed in this weekend's Casuals May Tournament at the Estadio Nacional: London Chiefs, Los Naranjos from Madrid, a Madrid/Casuals XI and the Casuals team. The round-robin games on Saturday were followed by dinner at the Jamor complex, and the teams re-assembled for the play-off games this morning.

In a very even match for 3rd Place, the Casuals beat the London Chiefs 1-0. In the even tenser Final, the Madrid/Casuals team was tied 1-1 with Los Naranjos at the end of full time: it took a Golden Goal decider during extra time to give the former a 2-1 victory.

May 15

After the Dutch team's resounding victory in yesterday's annual internal Kuiper Cup game against the British XI, three Casuals teams were involved in league fixtures today. The Men travelled to Porto with the U-18s to play Ramaldense: after a goalless first half, they went down 0-1 to a penalty stroke which proved to be the only goal of the game - this despite the full-time hooter going just as the Casuals were about to equalise a meter from their opponents' goal line.

Next up, the U-18s recorded a good 3-0 win against CAMIR. However, this was marred by the loss of their captain after 20 minutes with a badly sprained ankle, and his absence was a further blow when they took on a very strong Sport Club in their second game. Despite putting up brave resistance, they were eventually overwhelmed 0-7.

In the afternoon game at the Estádio Nacional, the Ladies played out a 0-0 draw against Belenenses in their final league game of the season.

May 8

Another busy weekend for the Casuals began yesterday when the U-12s lost their first game in the morning Tournament, but won the return game against Carris 1-0. In the afternoon the Veterans beat Belenenses 2-1.

Meanwhile the Men's team travelled to Lousada to paly the League leaders. In a fast-paced game the Casuals eventually lost 2-6, but the scoreline belies their improved hockey.

This morning's early start to travel down to Espinho to play the second-placed team Lamas, was always going to be a difficult fixture. However the Casuals found themselves 2-0 up after 10 minutes, but their efforts in the previous evening's game eventually caught up with them, and Lamas piled on the pressure in the second half to run out 7-2 winners.

Back at the Estádio this morning, the U-12s played their second Tournament, drawing their first match against Carris 2-2 and losing a very even second game 2-3.

The Ladies then played Lousada and, despite going 0-1 down, held their own until the last 15 minutes when 2 goals in as many minutes condemned them to a 0-3 defeat.

May 1

Three Casuals teams were in action this weekend in a total of 5 league matches at the Estádio Nacional,

Yesterday afternoon the Ladies were no match for the League leaders Sport Club and went down 0-6. The U-18s then took on CAMIR and, despite a slow start which included going behind from an error of judgement, were eventually comfortable 6-1 winners.

In contrast, this morning's games were all decided by a single goal. The Ladies lost their second game of the weekend 0-1 to CAMIR.and this was followed by the Men 's match against Lousada: the Casuals fought hard to stay with the visitors' speed and were only beaten 0-1 by a second half penalty corner.

In the last match of the morning, the U-18s also played Lousada: in a fast and evenly matched game the Casuals came from 1-2 down to draw level at 2-2 and then piled on pressure to find the late winner that gave them a good 3-2 win.

April 17

This afternoon the Men´s team travelled to Porto for their league match against Sport Club. Playing some good attacking hockey, the Casuals took an early lead and went into the interval 3-0 ahead. Although Sport Club's spirited fightback reduced the score to 3-1 and then 4-2, the Casuals stretched their lead to 6-2. Sport managed to pull back two goals in the last five minutes (the second from a penalty corner in the dying seconds), but Casuals fully deserved their 6-4 win.

April 10

Over the past five days, St.Catherine's College from Cambridge University visited Lisbon, playing four matches against various Casuals teams. In a pacy encounter on Wednesday evening, the Men's team  won a very evenly matched game 2-1.

On Friday evening the U-18s did well to hold St.Catherine's to a 1-1 draw, equalising with the last move of the game. The Veterans found the students' pace and control difficult to cope with on the Saturday, going down 1-3; but they gained some measure of revenge in this morning's Mixed game, which they won 6-2.

Later this morning the Ladies beat Juventude 5-0 in their league match. In the other league fixture, Casuals Men beat their Juventude counterparts 4-0, with many more chances going begging.

April 3

Last week the Casuals played two matches against Warwick University Mixed HC. On Thursday evening a strong line-up of members of the Men's and Ladies teams were comfortable 6-2 winners; but on the Saturday a slightly older team struggled to match Warwick's pace. Despite opening the scoring, Casuals then fell behind repeatedly until, at 3-4 down, they were awarded a penalty corner in the last minute, from which they were fortunate to snatch a 4-4 draw.

Later that afternoon, the Casuals Ladies had an excellent 2-0 win in their league match against Belenenses.

However in this afternoon's league fixture against Futebol Benfica, the Men went down heavily 1-6. Despite taking the lead, a frankly under-par and under-size pitch did them no favours. 2-1 up at half-time, the hosts took their chances well, to add 4 more goals in the second half.

March 27

Three Casuals teams drove up to Lousada yesterday to play their respective league matches against the local club. Unfortunately only the U-18s completed their game, with an impressive 3-0 win to start their outdoor league season: both the Ladies' and the Men's games had to be cancelled due to heavy rain.

Meanwhile the Casuals Veterans took part in the Federation's '4th Veterans Challenge' at the National Stadium, winning their first match against União Lamas 1-0. Their other 3 matches against Lousada, Palmense and Belenenses all ended in 0-0 draws, leaving the Casuals halfway down the final standings.

In today's league match against Carris, the Men started sluggishly and were down 0-1 for most of the first half. But after pulling level early in the second half, the Casuals started to play some good attacking hockey and  eventually established a 4-1 lead. Despite Carris scoring a second goal from a penalty corner, the Casuals ended 4-2 winners.

March 13

Despite going 1-0 ahead in yesterday's Veterans match against Belenenses, an evenly balanced game eventually saw the Casuals held to a 1-1 draw.

This morning, a young Casuals mixed team provided the opposition for the National U-16 squad, which also included several Casuals players. In a very even match the Casuals team were beaten 1-2, with all 3 goals coming in the last quarter of the game.

Feb.27

During the week, Casuals played three U-14 matches against Woodbridge School from the UK, losing one game and drawing the other two. Despite being able to call on some players from the Escola L.Freitas Branco team, the hosts soon realised they were playing a very experienced squad with a high technical and tactical level of play.

The Casuals rose to the challenge and, despite being outplayed for some periods in each game, the results of 3-3, 1-4 and 2-2 reflect three very hard-fought and well-played matches by both teams.

Feb.20

In yesterday's Veterans fixture, the Casuals played Futebol Benfica and took a 2-0 lead before their opponents pegged them back to 2-2. In what was to prove a high scoring game, the Casuals once again opened up a two goal lead, only for Futebol Benfica again to pull level at 4-4. However, in the last 7 minutes the Casuals slotted two more goals to seal an exciting victory 6-4.

This morning the U-12s concluded their indoor season with two matches against Carris at their Alcantara hall (see photo in the 'Photo Gallery' section). Both the matches were very close and, despite the Casuals improving steadily during the morning's play, both games ended in 1-2 defeats.

Their was some measure of consolation this afternoon, when the Men beat Carris in their first league match since the indoor break. The Casuals went 1-0 ahead after 10 minutes and played some good attacking hockey which could have increased their lead before the interval. Carris levelled from a penalty corner but, despite the game becoming scrappy, Casuals scored two more goals for a 3-1 win.

Feb.13

This morning the U-14s began their participation in an Indoor Tournament at Casa Pia, by taking on the ESLFB U-16 team.

Despite trailing 0-1 at the interval against an older side, they evened the score with a perfectly executed field goal. Although the Casuals gave away a penalty flick (which had to be retaken), their kicking back defended the second attempt. The game then went into extra time, with ESFLB scoring the golden goal in the dying minutes.

However, Casuals won the third place play-off against Futebol Benfica with a runaway victory. Leading 2-0 at the interval with a field goal and a converted short corner from their captain, the rest of the team took up the running with four more goals to take 3rd place 6-2

Feb.6

The Men took 3rd Place at the National Indoor Finals this weekend. In their group matches yesterday, they beat Sport Club 6-1 and lost to Lousada 3-8. After a good start in their semi-final against Espinho this morning, they suffered a serious setback when one of their key players had to go off with a broken finger. The Casuals battled on, even replacing their keeper with an extra field player, but were eventually beaten 2-8 (see photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section, and info at: http://www.fphoquei.pt/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1496:fase-final-de-seniores-masculinos&catid=8:hoquei-sala&Itemid=12

Feb.1

As last season's National Champions, the U-18s were tonight present at the annual 'Gala do Desporto de Cascais' at the Estoril Casino (see photos in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section). After dinner, the team was one of many sportsmen and women to be presented with a commemorative prize.

Jan.30

At this weekend's National Indoor Finals, the U-18s began yesterday with a forseeable 1-9 defeat to Carris, but followed this with a good 4-1 victory against Sport Club. In this morning's match against CAMIR, they continued their improved play and were leading 2-1, only to concede a penalty corner in the last minute: their opponents converted this to snatch a 2-2 draw. In their final game against Lousada, the Casuals played their best hockey of the weekend: in an inspired first 15 minutes they went on the attack to lead 2-0 and reached the interval 2-1 up. However the second half saw Lousada fight back and, despite some spirited play, a tiring Casuals side eventually lost 3-5 (see photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section). Carris became National Champions, comfortably winning all their 4 games.

(see more photos and info at: http://www.fphoquei.pt/index.php?option=com_phocagallery&view=category&id=80:sub-18-masculinos-20102011&Itemid=69).

This afternoon the Ladies played in the 5th Indoor Qualifying Tournament. They beat Belenenses 3-0 in the semi-final and then won 4-2 against Sport Club in the Final.

Jan.23

Today the U-18s struggled to cope with a strong Carris team in their indoor match, eventually going down 1-10.

This was followed by the Men's second indoor match of the weekend: having yesterday played some attractive hockey to beat Carris 9-2, they had a sterner test today against Futebol Benfica. With the teams matching each other goal for goal, the Casuals were unable to take a serious advantage during a 5 minute suspension of one of the Futebol Benfica players. With the scores tied at 5-5, the Casuals then conceded a penalty corner in the last minute - their opponents duly converted this to take the game 6-5.

Jan.16

After the Veterans played some good attacking hockey on Saturday to beat Belenenses 4-1, today the Juniors played several indoor matches.

In a 3-way Tournament at Casa Pia the U-12s had a flying start against Carris, scoring in the first minute. They followed this with two more goals and finally converted a short corner to go into the interval leading 4-0. Unfortunately one of the Casuals players was then red carded in the 20th minute with the score at 4-2. Despite still leading 5-3 after a further goal, they could not hang on with one less player and Carris took full advantage to win 6-5 with three quick goals in succession. With the youngsters a bit demoralized and with one player less, the Casuals were outplayed by Futebol Benfica in the second game to lose 0-4.

Meanwhile, at the Escola Nautica hall the U-18s took advantage of a depleted Carris team to record an 8-0 win.

Jan.9, 2011

This season all the Casuals' Junior teams are sponsored by Ernst & Young and on Wednesday evening the U-18 squad was presented to Sr.João Alves, the company's Country Managing Partner (see photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section). Despite losing their game against a very strong Langley Park School team from the U.K, the Casuals played some good hockey, and some of their players were selected for the Lisbon XI to play Langley Park again on Saturday.

Dec.8

Today the Junior teams had a tough start to their indoor season. In the morning the U-14s started with a 0-2 loss to the Escola Freitas Branco U-16s; they then lost a close game against the Escola's U-14s, but won their last game against Futebol Benfica U-14s 5-2.

In the afternoon the U-18's played two matches against a very experienced Carris team, losing both games 0-7 and 1-8.

Dec.5

The Men played their first indoor league match today against Futebol Benfica: in a fast and furious game, they twice led, only for their opponents to level the score. But, despite twice being down to five players because of yellow cards, the Casuals found a winner 8 minutes from time to run out 3-2 winners.

Nov.28

The Ladies played two league fixtures this weekend: after yesterday's convincing 8-0 win against Camir, they faced a difficult trip to the League leaders Sport Club today. Despite holding their own for most of the match, they went down 0-1 to a late goal by Sport.

Also this morning, the Men played an indoor friendly against Carris, winning 6-2.

Nov.21

On Saturday the Veterans took on Belenenses. After twice going behind, the Casuals levelled the scores at 2-2 - in fact they were unlucky not to find a winner in the last 10 minutes, especially when  when a penalty corner rebounded off the Belenenses post.

After the U-14s' Sunday morning match against Escola L.F.Branco, the Men played União de Lamas in their last league fixture before the indoor break. In the first half the Casuals played their best hockey of the season to lead 2-0 from two well-taken field goals. But they were unable to maintain this quality in the second half and Lamas replied with 3 goals in 10 minutes to win 3-2.

Nov.14

Today's league match saw the Men host Espinho. For a change, the Casuals got off to an energetic start and they were 2-0 up after 20 minutes, but a penalty corner and a good field goal saw Espinho pull back to 2-2 by the interval.

Ten minutes into the second half the Lisbon team went ahead from another penalty corner, but Espinho once again managed to level the scores with a penalty stroke. In a match marred by the visitors' ill-tempered behaviour, the Casuals can take pride in refusing to be drawn into any sort of reaction. The final 3-3 scoreline is perhaps scant reward for this and some much improved hockey.

Nov.7

In their latest league match today, the Men hosted Sport Club from Porto; but a sluggish first half performance allowed the visitors to go into the break 1-0 up. The Casuals' improved performance after the interval soon earned them an equaliser from a penalty corner rebound. But some good saves by the opposition keeper and two crashing shots coming back off the post frustrated the home team and, despite almost constant pressure in the Sport Club half for the last 15 minutes, the Casuals were unable to find a winner.

Oct.30

The Men's and Ladies' teams shared a coach trip north to play Juventude in their respective league fixtures today.

The Ladies had only travelled with 9 players and lost a further player to a warm-up injury. Despite Juventude going 1-0 ahead, the Casuals eventually converted a penalty stroke to level the scores. With 5 minutes left, their captain had to leave the field after a collision with the opposition keeper: but the remaining 7 Casuals fought bravely to earn themselves an unlikely 1-1 draw.

The Men opened the scoring early on from open play and soon added to the score to be 3-0 up at the interval. Using the full width of an excellent pitch, they added 4 more goals in the second half to end with a 7-0 scoreline.

In the last fixture of the day, the Veterans lost 0-2 to Belenenses Veterans.

Oct.24

In the Men's second league match this morning against Futebol Benfica, the Casuals went a goal up from a short corner right on half time. But 10 minutes into the second half, their opponents equalised from their own short corner. With play picking up speed, the Casuals keeper saved a penalty stroke; but a defensive slip allowed Futebol Benfica to score what proved to be the winning goal in the final 1-2 scoreline.

Oct.17

Today the Veterans played a small triangular tournament against Carris Veterans and a visiting superveterans team from Cartouche in Holland. Despite having several chances in their first game against the Dutch, the Casuals only managed to score from a penalty corner to win 1-0.

In their second game against a strong Carris team, they fought hard to earn themselves a 0-0 draw. Carris then beat a tiring Cartouche 4-0.

Oct.5

After the frustration of having Sunday's match against Lamas postponed due to the heavy rain, the Men's team today played their first league match against Ramaldense. After a bright start, the Casuals seemed to have earned themselves a penalty, which was however down-graded to a short corner. In a fast and evenly balanced game, chances fell to both sides, but a defensive lapse in the last 10 minutes allowed Ramaldense to score from close range and win 1-0.

Sept.25

Today the Men's team played a practice game against Carris, running out 2-0 winners. Next weekend they play their first league fixtures against Lamas on Sunday, and against Ramaldense on Tuesday.

Sept.19

On Saturday the Veterans played the Carris Men's team in a practice game. Despite conceding only two goals in the first 60 minutes, the younger Carris players' fitness took its toll, with the Casuals eventually going down 0-5.

Sept.14

A group of Casuals players (both past and present) met up last weekend in Madrid to form two Mixed teams to play matches against Sport Club from Porto and two sides from the local Los Naranjos club in a small and intimate Tournament (see photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section). The games were played in an excellent spirit and were generally very close: after beating Los Naranjos A 1-0 in the semis, the Casuals 2 team eventually lost the Final on Sunday 0-2 to Sport Club.

July 3

To provide practice games for the new Carris Men's team, the Casuals fielded two teams this week. On Thursday evening the Men beat Carris 4-0 in a fast and entertaining game. This afternooon it was the Veterans' turn and only a Carris goal from a penalty corner in the closing minutes allowed them to come away with a 2-2 draw.

June 20

The Mixed team played two matches against the Royal Holloway University of London: in Wednesday evening's game we won 1-0, but on Saturday the visitors replied with a 2-1 win.

The Ladies travelled to the north for their last two league matches and beat CAMIR 6-1 on Saturday. Today they put up a good performance to lead Lousada with 5 minutes left, only to go down 2-4.

This morning the U-18s played the newly formed Carris Men's team: despite some scrappy hockey, they won 4-3.

June 13

The U-14s came 2nd in this weekend's Nationals in the north. They began yesterday with an excellent 4-3 win against the local Lousada team and followed this in the evening with a 4-3 win against Juventude. (Strangely, the other Casuals game yesterday also fininshed with a 4-3 win for the Dutch against the British).

This morning the U-14s drew 1-1 with Sport Club so, with one game left to play, both teams were tied on the same number of points. In their final game Casuals played out a 2-2 draw with CAMIR: with Sport winning their last game, they took the title. But finishing as runners-up (without losing a single game) is a great achievement for our U-14s.

June 10

Both the Casuals' senior teams had league fixtures today: the Ladies lost 0-2 to Ramaldense, allowing the northern team to be crowned Champions. The Men lost their away game to Futebol Benfica 1-5.

This weekend it is the U-14s who travel to Lousada for the Nationals.

June 6

U-18s are National Champions again

The format of this weekend's National Finals meant that the top four U-18 teams all played each other in the space of 24 hours. After winning yesterday morning's game against CAMIR 6-0, the Casuals took on their main rivals, Sport Club (the winners of the Porto Regional competition), in the evening. In a fast and hotly contested match, it was only in the last 15 minutes that the Casuals were able to make sure of the result with a 4-2 win.

Needing at least a draw in this morning's last game against Lousada, the team was fired up enough to record a 10-1 victory and take the Portuguese National title for the second year running. (see photos in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section - for more photos and details, check the Federation's web site at  http://www.fphoquei.pt/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1190:fase-final-cnhc-sub-18-masculinos&catid=7:hoquei-campo&Itemid=11)

The Ladies also won yesterday's league match against Nucleo Sport 8-0 to make it a highly successful weekend for the Casuals.

June 3

Last Saturday the U-12s hosted a Tournament in which some 20 children (including a team from Carris) and several parents took part (see photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section).

Today both the senior teams had good results in their league fixtures against Juventude: the Ladies won 4-0 and the Men won 6-0.

May 9

Yesterday afternoon the Men's team played Espinho in the league and, despite an improved performance, they went down 0-2.

This morning the Ladies had much the better of the game in their league fixture against CAMIR, but their inability to score left them with a disppointing 0-0 draw.

This was followed by the U-18s winning 10-2 against their CAMIR counterparts.

April 25

This weekend the Mixed team played two games against the visiting Monkstown H.C. from Ireland. In the first game on Saturday, the Casuals earned a hard-fought 1-1 draw. This game was followed by the Ladies league fixture, where they lost 0-4 to Lousada.

In the afternoon the Men travelled north to play Ramaldense. Although the Casuals were only 2-3 down with 10 minutes left, they were eventually beaten 2-6.

On the Sunday afternoon, the Mixed team played their second game against Monkstown and this time, despite a strong finish by the Irish in the last 15 minutes, the Casuals hung on for a 2-1 win.

April 18

Sunday saw three Casuals teams in action: the U-18s played Carris and a poor first half performance left them lucky to be going into the interval at 1-1. An improved second half saw them run out 7-1 winners, meaning that they again claim the Regional title with one game still to play.

Next up the Men took on Nucleo Sport and played some good hockey to win 2-0.

Finally the Ladies travelled to Lousada for their second league fixture and convincingly won their match against Juventude 7-2.

April 11

This weekend saw four different Casuals teams in action, all at the National Stadium - and not a single card was shown in any of the games!

On Saturday morning the Men played the League leaders, Lamas: with several U-18 players drafted into the senior side, the team gave a creditable performance, despite going down 2-4.

In the afternoon the Veterans played Oporto in their annual match for the Dawson Plate: after last year's defeat, the team put on a strong display to regain the Plate 6-0.

On the Sunday morning the U-18s won their league match against Escola Freitas Branco 6-1.

This was followed by the Mixed match against Oporto, which turned out to be very evenly balanced: the visitors looked to have the game won when they lead 2-1 with 10 minutes to go, but the Casuals were fortunate to scramble two late goals to take the game 3-2 and add the Seadon Cup to their possession.

March 28

After the Veterans beat Carris 2-1 yesterday afternoon, the Ladies this morning played their league fixture against Belenenses at the National Stadium. After deservedly leading 1-0 at half-time, the Casuals conceded an equaliser from a break in the second half. They had most of the play in the last 10 minutes but, despite earning several penalty corners, they were unable to find a winning goal.

March 21

This morning the Men narrowly lost their league fixture against Lousada. After equalising twice, it looked as if the Casuals would hold out for a 2-2 draw, but with two minutes to go, the visitors converted a penalty corner to win 3-2.

March 14

With both Men's and Ladies' fixtures postponed this weekend, it was the U-18s who played their first outdoor league match against Carris this morning. Leading 2-0 at the break, the Casuals kept up their attacking play to win the match 4-1.

March 7

It was the U-12s' turn to travel north to play in the Indoor Nationals in Mirandela and they had a tough start on Saturday, losing heavily to two of the strongest teams - Juventude and Lousada. However in today's matches they beat Espinho II 7-0 and then, despite being behind twice, fought back bravely to earn a deserved draw against a strong Espinho I in their last game (photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section).

The Men's team played Futebol Benfica at the National Stadium today and went down 1-2, despite showing some improved hockey.

Feb.28

This morning the Men's team played Ramaldense in pouring rain at the National Stadium. After the briefest of warm-ups, the Casuals went 0-1 down within 2 minutes and this early setback left them chasing the rest of the game. Despite working to find an equaliser, they eventually conceded two more goals in the second half to lose 0-3.

Next weekend the U-12s travel to Mirandela to compete in the Indoor Nationals.

Feb.21

This weekend the Men's team returned to outdoor hockey, travelling to the north for a double-header of League matches. On Saturday they earned a hard fought 1-0 win against Nucleo Sport, but today they went down 0-3 to Lamas who are now the league leaders.

Feb.14

The Casuals Ladies today came 2nd in the National Indoor Finals in Azões.

On Saturday they started their first group match against CAMIR nervously, going two goals down early on and turning around at the break 1-2 down. However the second half saw a spirited fight-back by the Casuals to end up 6-3 winners. In their second match against Lousada (one of the main favourites) they showed great determination in a fast and furious game to secure a 1-1 draw which took them into the Final.

The Final on Sunday saw them take on the other Lisbon team, Belenenses. The Casuals had a penalty turned down and missed several chances, whilst Belenenses scored the only goal of the game from one of their few chances (a penalty corner), to claim the title with a 1-0 win.

After the great spirit and detemination the Casuals Ladies showed throughout the weekend in all the three matches that constituted an exhausting schedule, this result may seem scant reward; but to come runners-up for the National title is a tremendous achievement.

Feb.7

At the National Indoor Finals in Azões, the U-18s began their group matches yesterday with a difficult 3-1 win against CAMIR; but in the evening they lost 2-4 to Lousada, despite battling all the way. This left them in the play-off for 3rd/4th place this morning against a Carris side who had only been kept out of the Final by a 0-1 defeat to Sport Club: the Casuals played their best hockey of the weekend to clinch 3rd place with a 7-2 victory (photo in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section). The winners of the Final were Lousada who beat Sport Club 3-2.

Next weekend it is the Ladies' turn to compete in the National Finals, also in Azões.

Jan.31

On Wednesday evening, the Ladies drew their second indoor league game against Belenenses. After deservedly leading 3-0 at the interval, they were eventually pegged back to 3-3, but their overall play showed a distinct improvement over the previous match.

In an unofficial indoor tournament this morning, the U-18s lost 3-4 to Carris and beat Escola Freitas Branco 3-1. In the afternoon they rounded off their preparations for next weekend's National Finals with a hard game against the Casuals Men.

Jan.24

With one more Tournament to play, the U-18s secured the Regional Indoor title with two wins this morning: after beating Escola Freitas Branco 10-1, they then beat their main rivals Carris 10-4.

In the evening they were invited by the Cascais Cámara to their 'Gala do Desporto' at the Estoril Casino. At the annual dinner and ceremony to honour Cascais teams and individuals for their sporting achievements, the Casuals U-18s were called on stage to receive an award for the National title they won last year.

Jan.16

The Ladies had a tough start to their indoor season, losing 0-5 to Belenenses in mid-week.

However, the Veterans put out a strong team against Carris today, winning comfortably 10-2.

Jan.9, 2010

In the traditional New Year's game between the over-40s and the under-40s, the latter were simply too strong for the oldies, eventually running out 6-1 winners.

During the week, the Ladies play their first indoor match against Belenenses, and next weekend the Veterans take on Carris.

Dec.20

At yesterday's National Indoor Finals, the Men started well by beating Ramaldense 6-4 in their first group match, but then went down 2-5 in their second game against Lamas.

Playing off for 3rd/4th place against Espinho this morning, they played some of their best hockey but, despite leading 2-1 and then 3-2, they lost 4-5 with the decider being scored with 4 minutes to go. Lousada beat Lamas 9-3 in the Final.

Dec.15

To top the Regional Indoor league, the Men needed to beat Futebol Benfica by 4 goals in their last match this evening. They started carelessly by going a goal down, but soon found the net and were 4-1 up at the interval. In the 2nd half they turned on the pressure to finish 11-1 winners.

They now join a group with Lamas and Ramaldense at this weekend's National Finals: as the competition takes place in Carcavelos, there is no excuse not to go and support them!

Dec.12

The juniors played 3 matches at the Estádio Nacional against the Escola Oscar Lopes from Porto: the U-12s lost 0-9, the U-14 Boys won 3-1 and the U-14 Girls lost 0-2.

In the afternoon, the Xmas Sixes tournament was narrowly won by the 'Dancers'.

Dec.6

Yesterday the U-12s lost their first indoor game against a stronger (and older) Carris team 1-6. The Veterans travelled to Porto and were also well beaten 0-6 by Sport Club.

However today the Men comprehensively beat Casa Pia 19-0 in their indoor league match.

In their second indoor Tournament this morning, the U-18s beat Escola Freitas Branco 9-1. They then beat Carris 7-2 in a fast and well-fought match. Despite the final scoreline, Casuals were only winning 2-1 at half time and then 4-2, before they made sure of the result with 3 goals in the last 5 minutes.

Nov.29

In their first games of the season, the U-14s won all their three indoor matches against Carris and Casa Pia teams yesterday.

This afternoon the U-18s played their first indoor Tournament, drawing 4-4 with Carris and beating Escola Freitas Branco 7-0.

The Men play their next indoor league match against Futebol Benfica in Belêm on Tuesday afternoon.

Nov.22

The first Mixed match of the season saw Casuals beat HMS Illustrious 3-0 at the Estádio Nacional this morning.

In the afternoon the Men played their second indoor league match against Casa Pia. With their finishing rather more deadly than last week, they overwhelmed their opponents 15-1. It was a sign of their improved team play that there were 8 different scorers on the match sheet.

Nov.15

The Men started their indoor campaign today with a 2-2 draw against Futebol Benfica. With only one penalty corner conversion and numerous missed chances, they will hope to improve their finishing in their match against Casa Pia next weekend.

Nov.8

The U-18s were unfortunate today to lose a very exciting and evenly-balanced Cup Final 2-3 to Sport Club. They lead 1-0 and 2-1, only to see their opoonents equalise one minute before the end of full time. In the second period of extra time, Sport Club scored a sudden-death 'Golden Goal' to win the Cup.

The Club Chairman, Peter Nabney, and the Ladies Captain, Claudia Fidalgo were at the 1ª Gala de Hóquei in Sta Maria de Lamas yesterday to receive respectively the "Fair Play Trophy".and the prize for "Top Scorer in the National Indoor Championships" from the Portuguese Federation. (see photos in the 'Members / Photo Gallery' section)

Nov.2

The Portuguese Federation has honoured the Club with awards for last season in two categories: Claudia Fidalgo has been awarded the prize for "Top Scorer in the National Indoor Championships" and the Club has been chosen for the "Fair Play Trophy".

Both prizes will be presented at the 1ª Gala de Hóquei  in Sta Maria de Lamas next Saturday.

Nov.1

On Friday evening the Veterans beat Lucerne SC, a Swiss touring team, 5-0.

The U-18s also won their Cup semi-final agains Lousada 7-0 yesterday. They play Sport Club (4-1 winners of the other semi-final against Juventude) in the Final at the Estádio Nacional next Sunday.

Oct.18

The U-18s won their Cup quarter-final agains Carris yesterday. The Casuals survived several scares in a difficult first half against much improved opponents, to go into the interval leading 2-1. Their improved play and some good finishing eventually saw them win 6-1.

They travel north in two weeks time to play Lousada in the semis.

Oct.11

The Ladies' team were unlucky to lose their Cup match to Ramaldense 0-1 yesterday. In a strongly contested game, the only goal came whilst the the Casuals' captain was off the pitch with an injury. Even so the they were unfortunate not to find the equaliser.

Next Saturday the U-18s play their first Cup match against Carris at the Estádio at 14.00.

Oct.5

The Men's team went out of this season's Cup competition after losing to Lousada. Despite being outclassed by their opponents for most of the first half of the game, they improved their marking and positional play but eventually lost 1-7.

Next Saturday the Ladies start their season with a Cup match against Ramaldense at the Estádio at 11.00.

Sept.20

Casuals started the new season with 3 matches against a visiting UK side - Tring H.C.: the Men won 7-1, the Veterans 5-2 and the U-18s 5-3.

June 8

Juvenis are National Champions

After winning both their games on the Saturday, the Juvenis yesterday beat Sport Club (the winners of the Porto Regional competition) 3-0 in the Final to become Portuguese National Champions.

I want to underline that, apart from (finally!) winning their first National title, the team played some very mature hockey: I am extremely proud of all of you!

Thank you also to all the Casuals who turned out to support us,

Tony
